BANKE, Jan 23: The Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City has become neat and clean these days with the coming into operation of a landfill site. The main city of the mid-western region has now changed its face.

The landfill site has been constructed with the assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at a cost of more than Rs 380 million. About 32 tonnes waste is collected from the city and carried by 17 trucks to the dumping site. The compost fertilizer that is made out of the biodegradable waste is sold, said Shiva Lamichhane, an employee of the Waste Collection Contracting Company. According to him, an income of around Rs 30 thousand to Rs 40 thousand is made by selling glass, plastic, bottles and tyre collected from the waste.

Sub-Metropolitan City's sanitation section officer Ashok KC said seven percent of the waste is dumped in the dumping site. Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City mayor Dr Dhawal Shumsher Rana said the sub-metropolis is becoming the best in waste management as the people are now becoming more aware when it comes to sanitation and the operation of a systematic landfill site.

The sub-metropolis has been segregating the waste into biodegradable and non-degradable waste and selling it. It has also been conducting awareness programmes for reducing the household waste.
