Nepal stands in favor of Ukraine's call at UNHRC for urgent debate on Russian invasion

KATHMANDU, March 1: Nepal is among 29 countries that voted in favor of Ukraine's call at the United Nations Human Rights Council for an urgent debate on gross violation of human rights in Ukraine territory and condemn Russia's invasion.

According to UNHRC, a total of 29 countries including Nepal voted in favor of holding an urgent debate on the latest situation in Ukraine, while five countries including China voted against the call. India has chosen to abstain from the meeting as it did in case of a UN Security Council resolution sponsored by the US against Russia over its invasion in Ukraine.

The UNHRC has a total 47 members and Nepal is one of them. China, Cuba, Eritrea, Russian Federation and Venezuela voted against holding the urgent debate with 13 abstentions including India.

With majority members voting in favor of holding an urgent debate on the latest situation in Ukraine, the UNHRC has decided to hold the meeting 'soon'. Russia on February 24 launched a large-scale military invasion in Ukraine, causing a huge number of loss of lives and properties. International human rights organizations calling Russia to be held accountable for the gross violation of human rights.

The UNHRC on Monday opened its 49th regular session, hearing statements from President of Switzerland, the President of Human Rights General Assembly, the UN Secretary General and the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
