Nepal loses to Azkals in int'l friendly

KATHMANDU, Oct 11: Nepal received a serious blow in their opening match of the ASEAN region´s tour on Tuesday as it was hammered 4-0 by Philippines during an international friendly match played at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila, Philippines.



Philip Younghusband netted twice for the home team while James Younghusband and Hartmann Mathhew netted one each for the Azkals to delight a huge gathering of home supporters present at the stadium.[break]



Nepal conceded first two goals before the interval and another goal in the second half, reports football news portal goalnepal.com.



Nepali team´s British coach Graham Roberts who always praised his defense line-up and tagged it world-class failed to fulfill its duty and conceded twice due to defense errors.



Nepal ranked 135 conceded first goal in the 17th minute against Azkals ranked 166. Philip, a former member of Chelsea, reserved team opened the scoring for home team in a counter attack taking advantage of poor defense line-up of Nepal.



James doubled the tally in the 30th minute through a powerful long range leaving goalie Kiran Chemjong helpless. Philip made it 3-0 when he netted his second goal 10 minutes after the interval utilizing a freekick taken by Caligdong. Similarly, Mathhew sealed the victory one minute from time, again in counter attack utilizing defense error.



The home side consisting of half a dozen Europe-based players intensified attacks from the very beginning and kept the match under control for most of the time. On the other hand, Nepali team seemed helpless.



Azkals created an attractive chance in the very fourth minute but failed to direct it towards the post. In the 15th minute, Nepali goalie Chemjong made a brilliant save to deny Caligdong´s attempt in the post after Nepali defenses were beaten. The home side squandered three scoring chances before the first goal.



Nepal could create only a couple of attractive moves but all in vain. The only impressive attack from the Nepali side came in 66th minute when Nirajan Khadka´s 25-yard strike was easily prevented by Fulham goalie Niel Ethridge.



Birthday boy Ramesh Katuwal of Nepal Police Club marked his debut for the national side as a replacement of Nirajan Khadka. Skipper Sagar Thapa was replaced by Bhola Silwal in the 20th minute. Jumanu Rai and Bikash Singh Chhetri also came as substitute for the visitors.



Nepal is meeting against Philippines for only the second time. Earlier, Nepal had played against Philippines during Kings Cup held in Thailand in 1982. On that occasion, Nepal had defeated Azkals 1-0.



Nepali National team is on a month-long tour of ASEAN region as part of preparation for SAFF Championship and AFC Challenge Cup final round.

Nepal will leave for Malaysia on Thursday. It is scheduled to play against Malaysia U-23 (Olympic team) on Saturday.
