Nepal-India women friendship society formed

KATHMANDU, March 8: Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has said that violence against women is a common problem of both Nepal and India and its solution should be sought jointly.



Opening the Nepal-India Women Friendship Society amidst a ceremony in the capital on Friday, the PM said incidents of women violence such as murder, violence and rape are common in Nepal and India and collective efforts were necessary to combat such problems.[break]



A new unity based on a new basis between the two countries was a must, he said, stressing the need of consolidating mutual relations from the people´s level.



Also speaking at the programme, visiting Union Minister of India Prakash Jaiswal said equitable development was not possible until and unless the violence against women appearing as a common problem of both countries was put to an end. He underlined the need of moving ahead together to fight against women violence.



National Women´s Commission Chairperson Shesh Chandtara expressed her hope that the Society would play an effective role to end violence against women.



Society Chairperson Chanda Chaudhary said mutual exchange of culture, language, social, economic and political matters to promote mutual relations between the women community of two neighbours is the priority of the society.



Meanwhile, human rights activists have said environment conducive for the victims to expose the crime in the society has encouraged the survivors to come ahead and file cases against the perpetrators.



Speaking at a programme organised by Human Rights and Peace Society on the occasion of International´s Women Day here today, Nepali Congress leader Suprabha Ghimire said controlling violence against women was a challenging task and stressed the participation of women at the decision-making level to ensure rights and justice to women.



Chairperson of Nepal Sadbhawana Party Sartia Giri said Nepali women are being sold to other countries in the name of foreign employment.



UCPN (Maoist) leader Kalpana Dhamala sought guarantee of women rights and women-friendly ruling system.



Ratna Gurung of CPN (UML) said women were forced to face political, economic and social biasness. Sushila Shrestha of Federal Socialist Party, organizing committee member Krishna Kandel criticized patronage to the women rights violators from the political parties and the government .
