Nepal has vaccinated almost all its eligible citizens against COVID-19: Dr Sameer Adhikari

KATHMANDU, April 17: The government has claimed that it has succeeded in meeting the target of the nationwide vaccination campaign against COVID-19. According to Joint-Spokesperson Dr Sameer Kumar Adhikari of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), the government's goal of fully vaccinating all the population above 18 years of age by May 2022 has almost been achieved.

Adhikari shared that the campaign was started by targeting the age group of 18 years and above till mid-April after launching the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 from January 28 last year has almost achieved the target set  by the government. He said that almost 95 percent of the target group have received the first dose of the vaccines till date. Likewise, 90 percent have received both doses of the vaccines. 

He also clarified that the government is focused on completing the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 in the coming days by vaccinating the non-vaccinated citizens as well.

Adhikari said the ministry had drawn attention to reports in various media outlets regarding the vaccines being misused. He also claimed that the government has not wasted a single vaccine. The joint-spokesperson also said that the government is using the vaccines in a reasonable way by formulating a strategy on how to use the vaccines obtained. He said that some of the vaccines were about to expire and that the vaccination campaign was being carried out by using vaccines, nearing their expiry date in some areas.

He also shared that the vaccination campaign was being carried out alongside the typhoid vaccination campaign till May 1. 

According to the MoHP, as many as 18,722,906 of the targeted 19,922,164 people have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 16,563,370 have received both shots. 

Of the targeted 3.42 million from the children group, 90 percent have received at least the first dose of the vaccine, while 75 percent have received both doses of the vaccines.
