In a fresh push to resume the process of sending Nepali women to Israel that stalled in 2010, a Nepali delegation led by Suresh Man Shrestha, the secretary at the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MoLE), visited Israel this week.[break]
Citing serious concerns over reported irregularities, including collection of exorbitant service charge from job-seekers by Nepali manpower agencies, Israel had stopped taking in Nepali caregivers.
“We offered an option of getting the governments of both Israel and Nepal involved in the recruitment process so that we can better assure the Israeli officials that there would not be irregularities in the process,” Purna Chandra Bhattarai, director general of the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) and a member of Nepali delegation, said.
So far, Nepali recruiting agencies have placed more than 7,000 Nepali caregivers with families in Israel, the most lucrative destination for such jobs.
During the six-day visit to Israel, Nepali officials also held interactions with Israel-based Nepali workers and social organizations.
According to Bhattarai, need for measures to bring down the cost involved in getting the jobs was high on the list of suggestions.
“During our interaction, Nepalis in Israel asked us to ensure fair recruitment with minimum cost. They also suggested proceeding ahead with the option of recruiting caregivers through government level if necessary,” said Bhattarai, who returned from Israel on Thursday.
