KATHMANDU, Sept 4: Nepal has faced second defeat in the team event in the second round of the ongoing 42th chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Only win for Nepal, a 114th ranked team, came in individual event after 2013 rated FIDE Master Bimal Lal Shrestha defeated 2188 rated Alfaro William of Nikaraguwa, William gave up in the 54th move.

Nepal's men team lost to the 102th ranked nation Nikaraguwa 3-1 while women's team faced defeat with similar score line to the Portugal. Only Shanta Thapa registered victory from the women's team. She beat Portuguese opponent Anna Silva in the 35th move.

In the first board match, 2034 rated FIDE Master Sajin Maharjan lost to 2348 rated Ampi Maro in the 45th move.

Another Nepali player Bhupendra Niraula who is rated 2071 faced defeat to 2175 rated Pineta Jose in the 24th move in the second board match.

Similarly in the 4th board match, 2013 rated Kshitij Bhandari was beaten by 2219 rated Ortij Marcos in the 36th move.

Nepal champion Sindira Joshi performed poorly as she lost to FIDE Master Anna Philip Bastita in the 39th move while Asmita Adhikari was defeated by Margid kambra in the 40th move. Likewise Monalisha Khambu also couldn't register the victory as she was beaten by Rita Mariyo in the 49th move.

In the third round of the Olympiad, Nepal will now face US Virgin Islands and Switzerland in the male and female respectively.
