KATHMANDU, Sept 26: Nepal registered a 2-1 win over Bangladesh in the ongoing SAFF U-18 Championship in the Bhutanese capital Thimpu on Monday.

Abhishek Rijal and Roman Limbu scored one goal each in Nepal’s second win of the Championship at Changlimithang Stadium. Mohhamed Al-Amin replied for the Bangladeshi side.

Nepal had made a shaky start in the Championship facing 1-0 loss at the hands of host team Bhutan in the opening match. However, defending champion Nepal recorded 2-0 win over Maldives on Friday to keep its hope alive for regaining the title.

Meanwhile, in the other match of the day, India overcame Maldives 2-1 and extended its points tally to six from three matches to climb at the top of table.

Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan also have equal six points from two matches but stay in the second to fourth positions on the basis of goal difference.

Winless Maldives has crashed out from the Championship, but the remaining teams have one each match to play. On the final day draw on Wednesday, Nepal will face India while Bangladesh and Bhutan will compete in the other match.

Abhishek Rijal put Nepal in the driving seat scoring an opening goal in the 21st minute. Rijal scored off brilliant header utilizing the cross from Rejin Subba. However, Bangladesh equalized in the 30th minute with Mohhamed Al-Amin’s header goal. Bangladesh was down to 10 men in the 53rd minute after Biswanath Ghosh was given marching order by referee for elbowing on Nepali defender Bishwas Udas.

Despite having a 10-men advantage, Nepal waited until the 80th minute for the second goal. Roman Limbu, who had scored a free-kick goal against Maldives in earlier match, scored similar goal to help Nepal seal an important 2-1 win over Bangladesh.
