KATHMANDU, August 5: Amid escalating tension between China and US over Taiwan issue, Nepal has called for peace and stability in the region.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Friday that Nepal is closely following the evolving situation in the Taiwan straits after the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan earlier this week. “Nepal has always been upholding One China Policy. Both Nepal and China have been respecting each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national independence,” said MoFA Spokesperson Sewa Lamsal.

Nepal's call for peace and stability in the region comes after China started the biggest-ever military drills around Taiwan beginning Thursday in retaliation to Pelosi's visit. China has launched a series of exercises in multiple zones around Taiwan, straddling some of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and at some points just 12 miles from the island's shore, according to international media reports.

Spokesperson Lamsal also said that Nepal wants to see peace and tranquility restored in the region.  “As a peace-loving country, Nepal is in favor of continued peace and stability in the region,” she further said.
