KATHMANDU, May 19 : Nepali Congress member of the National Assembly Radheshyam Adhikari has objected to Friday's arrest of several contractors saying that the arrests were illegal.

The government had briefly detained several contractors who had either defaulted on the construction work or done substandard work.

“The government is trying to govern the country through diktats. But no one is above the law in democracy, so the government should also act in accordance with the law,” he said speaking during the special hour of the upper house meeting on Friday.

Stating that the government should take initiatives to complete road construction work at the earliest, Adkhiari urged the government to follow legal procedures to punish defaulting contractors. He was of the view that the act of arresting the entrepreneurs just to pile pressure on them has no legal ground.

Meanwhile, Nepal Communist Party's upper house member Ram Narayan Bidari demanded punishment against the contractors who have defaulted on the construction works. Claiming that commuters and locals have suffered due to the delay in upgrading the Kathmandu-Kulekhani-Hetauda road section, Bidari also demanded action against the government officials responsible.
