KATHMANDU, Feb 25: Former minister and a leader of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Lalbabu Pandit said that the NCP should not form a new government under the leadership of the Nepali Congress (NC).

Pandit argued that letting the Congress party lead the government would mean the devaluation of the mandate expressed by the people in the 2017 parliamentary polls.

Taking to social media platform, Facebook, earlier on Thursday, Pandit said that there is still the possibility of unification in the ruling NCP in the changed context following the verdict of the Supreme Court (SC) to overturn the government’s decision to dissolve the 275-member House of Representatives (HoR).

Amid the exercise made by the leaders of the Dahal-Nepal faction of the party to garner support from the oppositions parties including the Congress party for the formation of a new government ousting Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Pandit stated that he would strongly object if NC leads the upcoming government.

Although the NCP reported a vertical split following PM Oli’s December 20 move of HoR dissolution, Pandit has not joined any of the two factions --- one led by Oli and the other by Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal.

Dahal and Nepal held consultations with NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Wednesday over the issue of forming a new government.
