KATHMANDU, July 12: Leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML have submitted claims to form a new government under the leadership of UML Chairman and Parliamentary Party leader KP Sharma Oli.

NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and UML Chairman Oli submitted the claims, along with the signatures of lawmakers from both parties, to appoint Oli as the new prime minister during their meeting with President Paudel at Shital Niwas late Friday evening. President Paudel is expected to appoint Oli as the Prime Minister on Sunday after completing the necessary procedures.

Earlier on Friday evening, President Paudel had invited parties to stake a claim for the formation of a new government in accordance with Article 76 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal.

Prior to this, President Paudel had consulted constitutional experts to determine the appropriate article of the constitution for forming the next government. Following these consultations, he officially called for the formation of a new government as per Article 76 (2).

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal presented a proposal for a vote of confidence in Parliament. However, he failed to secure the necessary support, with 63 votes in his favor and 194 against him.

On July 1, the NC and the CPN-UML agreed to form a government together. The two parties agreed to an agenda that included constitutional amendments. Following this agreement, the UML withdrew from the government led by Dahal, leading to his failure to secure the vote of confidence. Consequently, Dahal's government collapsed after failing to secure the vote of confidence.
