POKHARA, April 12: Top leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC) have stressed on the need for resolving the ongoing dispute over constitutional issues and bridging the widening gap between Madhes and the Hilly Region to make the upcoming local-level elections a success.

Addressing a promotional campaign in Pokhara, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba urged the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) and main opposition CPN-UML to adopt flexibility and promote social harmony. “We all belong to the same country, and it is not possible for us to develop the country without being united,” he said.

Stating that various parties were conspiring to break harmony and integrity of country with their “baseless agendas”, Deuba said, adding the citizens must decide whom to support.

A few days ago, the CPN-UML had held a mass gathering in Pokhara, where its chairperson KP Sharma Oli had challenged other parties by claiming that it was the biggest ever such gathering in the country.

In his response, Deuba said Oli was going to be disappointed seeking such a huge participation of the people in the NC's mass meeting.

The party's senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel claimed there was no party as reliable as the Congress.  He accused the CPN-UML of only creating problems but not working to solve them. Poudel also accused the Madhes-based parties of putting peace and democracy at risk by attempting to obstruct the elections. He urged the agitating forces to stop conducting ant-election campaigns.

Another NC leader Krishna Sitaula said the elections must not be deferred at any cost. He also said the parties could no longer gain votes by brandishing weapons. “Election is for the people not for political leaders or parties,” he said.

Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi, who also represents the NC, accused CPN-UML leaders of plotting to polarize Terai/Madhes and hills.

Meanwhile, the number of prospective candidates for the post of mayor of Pokhara-Lekhnath sub-metropolitan city is increasing by the day. Aware about the situation, Deuba said the party would unanimously nominate those candidates who were likely win the most votes.
