KATHMANDU, Nov 18: Nepali Congress (NC) leaders remained divided over whether to give continuity to the existing leadership of its student’s wing, the Nepal Student Union (NSU), or not. 

The extended term of the student wing’s incumbent committee is expiring on Sunday. Though NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba summoned a meeting of the central committee to take a decision about the fate of the NSU committee, the meeting was deferred for Sunday after leaders remained divided over whether to form an ad-hoc committee or extend the term of the existing committee. 

Students leaders and their cadres of different factions within the NSU staged demonstrations and encircled NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba when he reached the party office at Sanepa on Saturday.

Main opposition NC had extended the term of the incumbent committee led by Nain Singh Mahar for three month in September after the student wing failed to elect a new leadership through its general convention within the given deadline. With the NSU statute provisioning two years tenure for the executive committee, which was elected in 2016, most of the leaders are for forming an ad-hoc committee to hold the convention. 

A day before the expiry of the deadline given to elect new leadership, the student leaders had assembled in front of Sanepa-based party headquarters forming two separate groups. A group led by student leader Sushil Bhatta demanded holding the convention at the earliest and election of a new leadership while another group led by Baldev Timilsina stood in favor of forming an ad-hoc committee. Both groups are considered close to Krishna Prasad Sitaula.
