KATHMANDU, April 17: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has called a meeting of elected Central Working Committee (CWC) members on April 22 to settle the row over his nomination of the party´s vice president and general secretary.

President Koirala decided to settle the row over his nomination proposal through voting as provisioned in the party´s statute after his efforts to forge consensus with rival faction led by Sher Bahadur Deuba failed to yield results. Koirala has proposed Ram Chandra Paudel as vice president and Krishna Prasad Sitaula as one of the two general secretaries. [break]

Of the total 85 members in the party´s CWC, 64 members, including the president, have been directly elected through the party general convention.

President Koirala´s bid to pick vice president and general secretary had failed after his nomination proposal in the party´s CWC in November met stiff opposition from the Deuba faction. “Only elected CWC members have been invited for April 22 CWC meeting,” said NC Chief Secretary Basanta Kumar Gautam.

Deuba faction has maintained that they should either be the post of vice president or general secretary.

According to Gautam, altogether 22 CWC members put forth their opinions on the report presented by Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Peace Process Suggestion Committee during Saturday´s CWC meeting.

“The Committee has been asked to finalize its report by incorporating the suggestions from CWC members taking part in the discussions on Saturday,” he said.
