Nayana Shakya retires from swimming

KATHMANDU, Sept 8: South Asian swimming gold medalist Nayana Shakya on Monday announced her retirement from swimming. Shakya was a vital member of the Nepali team that won historic 4X100 m medley relay gold in 1999 Kathmandu SAF.



Runa Pradhan, Rubina Pradhan and Stuti Singh were the other members of the team. [break]



The 28 year-old had been suffering from back and ear problem since two years which ultimately led to her retirement.



"I got many opportunities to represent the nation through swimming. They were the best moments of my life, but now I am forced to retire due to my unfavorable health condition," Shakya said. she represented Nepal in the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th South Asian Games (SAG).



"I had wished to retire from swimming still competing, but ear problems did not permit me to swim. Besides this, back problem also caused problem in diving. I am very disappointed that I could not swim till the time I announced my retirement," said Shakya who plans to be active in swimming as coach.



Shakya, who had seven records in her name previously, still holds two national records in 200 m butterfly and 200 m individual medley.



Shakya, who came into the limelight after winning nine golds in the Fifth National Games in 2055, is also basketball national player. Shakya, included in the national team last year, captained Nepali basketball squad during the First South Asian Beach Games.
