As monsoon and winter in Himalayas seem fierce, early October to November is high time to watch the snow-capped mountains from the Kanchanjunga Base Camp (KBC). One of the great Himalayan trails of Nepal; the camp is a major hub for the tourists visiting the country every year. A flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur with a further seven-hour ride to Taplejung marks off the trekking trail to KBC. The journey comprises of 24-26 days of trekking that concludes at Oktang in the South point and PangPema in the North point of the camp. A 15-day package travelling to either of the points is however a matter of choice. 

As I trekked along the trails of KBC tentatively for the 25th time this October, I found the views of the glistening mountains and panoramic landscapes were more breath-taking than ever. However, unlike at Everest base camp (EBC) and Annapurna base camp (ABC), visitors and trekkers littering around the trails added disgrace to the natural beauty of KBC. The lengthy waiting hours at the check posts throughout the trek certainly held an unpleasant view.

From amateur trekkers to experts, KBC is a fun and friendly journey to feel oneself deeply amidst the lap of nature. One thing the beginners need to consider is to strictly follow the guidelines and itinerary throughout the trek. A good sleep and an abundant amount of water are important to make you stand strong on your knees while fighting altitude sickness. If any visitor seems to develop the sickness whatsoever, the trek could be halted with camps shifted 200-500m below and the treks continued the next day.
