KATHMANDU, July 15: Nepal Army has written to the Ministry of Defense requesting representation on the technical committee for integration of Maoist combatants. The eight-member special committee for supervising, integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants was reconstituted Monday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. “We have both the experience and expertise; that is why we have sought representation on the technical committee,” the spokesperson of the army´s Directorate of Public Relation, Brigadier General Ramindra Chhetri, said.

Chhetri added that the request is totally in line with the government´s priority for the peace process. “Our participation will help the peace process,” he claimed.

The request has come soon after the prime minister last week expressed the government´s commitment to taking the peace process to its logical conclusion in three to six months and reconstituted the special committee for integration including the technical committee as provided for under Article 146 of the Interim Constitution (IC).

Chhetri further argued that the request for NA´s participation in the new technical committee is also in keeping with Article 2.1 of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement which states, "There may also be a technical committee which would include experts functioning under the auspices of the special committee".

Clarifying NA´s official position on the integration issue, Chhetri said, "All accusations that our institution and the leadership are against the integration process are mere propaganda." He further claimed that NA has extended all out support to past committees and "will extend all cooperation to the committee that will now be formed".
