KATHMANDU, Sept 29: The Lumbini Province police has come up with a plan to mobilize more than 7500 police personnel to ensure the safety of the general public during the upcoming Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals.
As per a comprehensive security strategy prepared by the Province Police Office (PPO), Lumbini, a total of 7644 police personnel will be deployed in the province to address the surge in criminal activities including thefts, brawls, ticket frauds, sexual assaults and anti-government activities that occur during the festive season. The strategy has also made special provisions to secure financial institutions, highways, government offices, and religious sites in the province.

According to the spokesperson of the PPO, Lumbini, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Madhav Prasad Shrestha, the province police is planning to mobilize sniffer dog teams, drone surveillance, mobile surveillance, as well as additional personnel on a need basis for the 12 districts in the province.
“Our main target is to make the general public feel the presence of the police while ensuring their security during the festive season,” SSP Shrestha told Republica, “Two five-member surveillance teams led by senior police officials will be mobilized to ensure the effectiveness of the security strategy.”
He added that a surveillance team led by a senior police official will also be mobilized in each district to guarantee that the strategy is efficient and successful. As per the security strategy, 1420 personnel will be mobilized to provide security for various offices, 491 for foot patrol, 461 for motorbike patrol, and 272 for rural patrol.
The PPO has also made provisions including travellers help desk, highway escorts, armed cross patrol along highways and special 24-hour highway checking to safeguard the general public travelling to their ancestral home to celebrate the festivals. SSP Shrestha told Republica that a total 160 police personnel will be stationed in various help desks in the province, 154 as highway escorts, 263 for patroling along highways and 278 in the 24-hour highway checking. He added that as many as 1004 personnel from the reserve forces in the province will also be deployed as per the security plan.
