NEPALGUNJ, June 24: Ankit Sah, of Nepalgunj-7, who secured 75 per cent in the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exams two years ago and went to Bangalore, India to study for further studies, has now regrets over his decision to go India.

The only reason for his regret, he said, is that he decided to go to Bangalore to study at plus two level but he could not get desired results compared to the financial investment made.

"Though I joined one of the top colleges of Bangalore, I could neither secure good marks compared to SLC exams nor could I learn anything new besides what was in the course books," said he, adding, his parents spent nearly three times the amount that is required on average to study at plus two levels in Nepal.

As his parents are unable to pay for his bachelor's level education in India, Sah has returned home and decided to join a college in Nepalgunj to pursue his bachelor's level studies.

"I made a mistake by deciding to go to India. A huge amount of money went in vain. Had I studied in Nepal, I could have completed my bachelor's levels with the money I spent in India," said he.

Like Sah, another student Renuka Acharya, of Kohalpur, who completed her plus two level from a reputed school in Kathmandu, is also preparing to return home and join the Mahendra Multiple Campus for bachelor's level studies.

"Compared to the amount my parents spent for my higher secondary education in Kathmandu, I think I did not gain much. So, I have decided to return to my home town for bachelor's level studies," lamented she.

She said she decided to study in Kathmandu hoping that she would learn many new things besides what is in the course books.

The students, who had left their districts in pursuit of quality education after passing their SLC exams, are now not only returning to their districts but are also advising SLC graduates not to repeat the same mistakes.

"It is reasonable to go outside your district to join colleges if the subjects you want to study are not available in your district. Otherwise, I do not see any reason why one should leave the district for plus two education," said Lila Rana, who left Kathmandu for her home district after completing her plus two education along with Acharya.

Some teachers also opined that SLC graduates who leave home for further studies may turn to bad habits.

Karna Basnet, a teacher at Gorkha United Public Higher Secondary School in Kohalpur, said, "Lately, many good plus two colleges are in operation even in villages. Students have opportunity to study subjects they want to study."

He said many SLC graduates students, who went to Kathmandu for plus two education in the past, were found abusing drugs.

"Students living under their parents' strict supervision until SLC may feel a sense of freedom while away from their home and chances are that they may develop bad habits like taking drugs or alcohol. Many students who passed SLC with flying colors from our school and left home for further education have been found involved in drug addictions," added he.

Kamala DC, former central member of PABSON, also said that it is a waste of time and money to leave the district for plus two education.

"A hard-working student secures good marks wherever he or she studies," said she.

Tejendra BK, the chairman of Gyanodaya Higher Secondary School in Nepalgunj, said that as course of studies in Grade 11 and 12 are same and qualification of teachers in any plus two colleges is similar, there is no difference in joining any college after SLC.

"Earlier, parents thought that their children would outperform if they get enrolled in reputed colleges and big cities. But lately, many parents have realized that student's achievement depend upon how they study and not where they study. This is why the trend of leaving the district for plus two education is gradually decreasing."

He said the number of students in plus two colleges in the districts has been increasing lately. That is why the administration of Gyanodaya has decided to run classes under Science Stream from this academic session.
