SARLAHI, Oct 16: Every year on Ghatasthapana, the first day of Dashain, Hindus across the country sow seven different types of grains in an earthen pot or leaf plates locally known as Tapari. When these seeds grow into saplings, they are called Jamara. On the tenth day, which is called Dashami, seniors clip Jamara in the ears of their young ones along with Tika on their foreheads.

However, these Jamaras have become popular these days for their juice as well especially in Harion bazaar. After waking up every morning, Rishiram Dahal of Danuwari Tole reaches Harion bazaar along the East-West Highway with his table, Jamara and the equipment required for making juice. As soon as he places his table, a large number of people queue up in front of him for having the juice of Jamara.

It has been two months since he came up with the idea. "I have earned around 60 regular customers," said Dahal, adding, "More people prefer having the juice of Jamara made up of Wheat and barley. Dahal claims that the juice can cure various kinds of diseases and skin problems such as cancer, low and high blood pressure, diabetes and gastritis, among others.

According to him, his brother-in-law's lungs problem could not be treated in hospitals but he was cured after 5/6 days after having the juice of Jamara. "I got into this business after finding out that it improved the health of my brother-in law. Santosh Shrestha of Harion who has been consuming the juice for more than a month seemed very satisfied with the effects. "I had high blood pressure and piles which are under control after I started consuming the jamara juice," said Shrestha.

Not just him, another regular customer Ashok Thapa is equally satisfied with the effects of the juice. He too had high blood pressure. "It controlled my high blood pressure so well that the medicines prescribed by doctors never did," said Thapa.

Dahal had taken his brother-in-law to the house of Sita Bhattarai of Samkhusi, Kathmandu. After watching how the juice provided by Bhattarai cured his brother-in-law's illness, he decided to sell jamara juice. He charges Rs 50 for 30 ml juice. With the number of customers increasing every day, Dahal has used most of his land for growing Jamara these days.
