Monsoon Preparedness Discussion Program in Melamchi

KATHMANDU, July 8: In Sindhupalchowk district, which has been facing natural calamities every year, inter-municipal discussions have been intensified for monsoon preparedness and disaster response.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology conducted a discussion with experts on the situation of floods and landslides, possible risks and damage mitigation measures in the areas around Melamchi and Indrawati rivers and key issues related to the monsoon.

According to Beda Nidhi Khanal, chief district officer (CDO) and coordinator of the District Disaster Management Committee, Sindhupalchowk, the program has been effective in preparing the charts of emergency preparedness plans by the local governments of the district and implementing early warning systems and a communication tree.

The program is part of the Last Mile Communication Strengthening Project in the South Asian region with the technical assistance of the Regional Integrated Multi-Disaster Early Warning System with the objective of managing the monsoon forecast information from the local level and using predetermined procedures for damage mitigation.

The program was attended by people's representatives of Indravati, Helambu, Panch Pokhari Thangpal and Melamchi municipalities, Department of Water and Meteorology, Disaster Risk Management experts, experts of Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Disaster Management Branch of Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration and heads of three security agencies of Sindhupalchowk.
