MOITRA’S MUSICAL ACCOUNT OF HIMALAYAS

MOITRA’S MUSICAL ACCOUNT OF HIMALAYAS

KATHMANDU, Nov 21: Combining music and storytelling, various compositions of Bollywood music director Shantanu Moitra were played during a musical event organized at the Rastriya Naachghar, Jamal, on Sunday.

The event ‘Songs of The Himalayas’ was brought to Nepal following the efforts of UNICEF goodwill ambassador to Nepal Ani Choying Drolma in support of Nepal Tourism Board. In her words, she wanted people of Nepal to experience the musical journey themselves. Stressing to live in the present, she even requested those in the audience to put their mobile phones aside to enjoy the show.

The starting piece of the session included a mixture of Buddhist chant and Hindu slokas of Lord Shiva sung by Ani and Kaushaki Chakraborty.

The vocalists were accompanied by flute, cajón, guitar, keyboard, violin, percussions and singing bowls among others.

Purbayan Chattarji in sitar also made quite impression on the audience with his magnificent play and the control he displayed over the strings.

All the compositions played were coupled with stories that Moitra told about the people had met and who had inspired him with their journeys and stories during his 100 days in the Himalayas.

The changing lights were eye-pleasing and pictures of the magnificent Himalayas being played in the background complimented the music being played.

Ani also sang few of the pieces including the sacred Buddhist mantra ‘Om Mane Padme Hun’ and an original song dedicated to mothers, her own and all the mothers of the world, describing the virtue of patience they practice and the sacrifices they make in the name of their children. Through her song she had urged the children to understand their mothers.

The show was a charity event and all the funds collected was given to Aarogya Foundation, an organization working for kidney patients.

The first edition of the event was held in Mumbai last year.
