Mobile phone subscribers can now get credit of up to Rs 200

NTA tells operators to give 100% bonus on top up

KATHMANDU, March 25: Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has directed GSM operators to provide credit of up to Rs 200 to their subscribers.

A meeting of the NTA held on Tuesday via video conferencing took the decision to ensure that people can get connected to their friends and family in this period of crisis even if they run out of balance.

Min Prasad Aryal, the spokesperson for the NTA, told Republica that one can get credit balance of up to Rs 200 from telecommunication operators without paying any extra fee. “The decision will be of help to people in this time of crisis,” he added.

So far, Nepal Telecom (NT) and Ncell has been giving credit facility of Rs 40 each. While the NT is providing the service free of cost, Ncell charges a fee of Rs 2.55.

The decision of NT means telecom operators will not be able to charge any fee for the credit facility.

Besides, NTA has also told telecommunication operators to give subscribers 100% bonus on their top up. It also said that operators won't have to take prior permission from the NTA to introduce voice or data packs in special rates.

“These schemes will help customers as market is closed and people do not have access to balance in their phones especially in rural areas,” Aryal added.
