MMC defeats Rupanedhi XI

JHAPA, Nov 20: Manang Marsyangdi Club (MMC) has advanced into the semifinals of the ongoing 2nd Satashi Gold Cup Football tournament, defeating Rupandehi XI in the quarterfinal clash on Sunday. 

The ‘A’ Division club overcame Rupandehi XI 4-3 on the penalties to secure its berth in the last four of the tournament, held in Jhiljhile of Jhapa district. The match was pushed towards the penalties after both sides scored one goal each in the regulation time. Rupandehi took an early lead in the match with Cedric Aba’s goal in the sixth minute. 

Man-of-the-match Dona Thapa leveled the score-line in the 79th minute for MMC.  

Bimal Basnet, Kamal Shrestha, Nirajan Malla, and Dona Thapa converted the penalty kicks into goals for MMC, while Niraj Basnet was the only player for Rupandehi to score from the spot. Rupandehi’s Rajin Dhimal’s shot went wide while Bijay Dhimal’s attempt was saved by MMC goalie Dinesh Thapa Magar.

In the first semifinal match of the tournament on Monday, Jhapa XI will face Tribhuvan Army Club. The champion of the competition will take home Rs 500,000 while the runner-up will be rewarded with Rs 250,000.
