There is a growing trend among Nepali student to opt between science or commerce when they score a higher percentage in the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) board. However, many are unable to cope with the pressure of the studies because of their lack of interest in the subject they choose. They are prone to psychological pressure. 

It is a common myth that the humanities stream is for those who are not smart enough for science or commerce, or for those who have obtained a poor result in the SEE. Thus, it is one of the most ignorant streams.

Actually, the mindset of choosing the stream is the main problem. What we have been learning is that if we choose science, we are regarded smarter. Moreover, the humanities stream is not given proper priority in many colleges because the fee structure of this stream is comparatively lower than other streams.  Additionally, people think that students of humanities are basically not focused on their studies and career, and are carefree. 

In reality, humanities and social science nurture personal skills and wisdom to cope with the concurrent social agendas by thinking deeper.

Apart from that, humanities are for those students who are confident in themselves they can tackle complex problems, write effectively, and know about society, culture, religion.

Many of the deepest experiences in life can’t be numerically measured. Similarly, what humanities teaches is usually analytical, critical or speculative. In a deeper sense, human life is not only a scientific affair. Being a student of social science, one can learn history, languages, literature, law, philosophy, religion, music, dance, arts, sociology, journalism, psychology and many more. 

Humanities is distinct from medical studies, engineering or commerce. It helps us to reflect the human life from different dimensions.  

At present, admissions in Bachelor of Social Work after high school have risen drastically. Some students choose it because they think it is an easy escape from textbooks. While other students know the importance of studying Social Science. 

Meanwhile, this stream has been understood by students themselves and inspired to study the courses due to its wide range of perspectives.  In my context, I personally decided to choose humanities after completing high school despite several disagreements. I got a chance to explore within myself because of this course. Additionally, this subject has taught me to cope with different culture and time.

Thus, with the changing time, parents, teachers, and students themselves should be aware about the importance of humanities.  Let them teach to the future generation that none of the streams is more important than the other. Rather, it’s the knowledge that matters the most.
