Mass suicide attempted again in Dailekh

DAILEKH, March 27: Hira Thapa Magar, 28, of Lekcha in Dungeshwar Rural Municipality-3 attempted mass suicide along with her children on Thursday morning. First, she killed her 3-year-old son Umesh Thapa by hanging him by a piece of cloth. Shortly afterwards, she and her daughter jumped into the Lekcha River near her home and attempted suicide. However, her 9-year-old daughter managed to save herself by escaping from her mother's grip.

Hira, who jumped from the cliff, was seriously injured. She is currently undergoing treatment at the District Hospital, Dailekh. Three weeks ago, a family committed suicide by jumping into the Karnali River in west Dailekh. It has not been even three weeks since the incident took place and another attempt was made to commit mass suicide in Dungeshwor Rural Municipality.

Indrajit Sunar, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Dailekh said that the incident was being investigated and the initial investigation revealed that the mother and her children had tried to commit mass suicide but her daughter had managed to escape. He said an investigation was underway to find out whether the suicide was due to poverty or other causes.

Hira, who was critically injured in the incident, was immediately rescued by the locals. The deceased has been kept at Dailekh District Hospital for a postmortem. According to Dailekh Police Chief DSP Anupam Shrestha, Hira tried to commit suicide by jumping off te cliff on the bank of the Lekcha River.

Her husband Thir Bahadur Thapa Magar has been in India for employment for a year now. Earlier, Suki Baduwal, 35, of Nimayal, Aathbis Municipality-3 had committed suicide by jumping into Karnali River along with her four children.
