District Court orders Dilli Bista to pay Rs. 1.5 m

The Kanchanpur District Court has ordered former SP Dilli Raj Bista to pay Rs. 1.5 million in bail amount. Bista is one of the eight police officers who allegedly destroyed evidence of Nirmala Panta’s brutal rape and murder last year. The court has fined Bista of Rs. 600,000 for torturing suspects and Rs. 450,000 for destroying the evidence.

Nepal, Japan to ink labor agreement ‘soon'

Nepal and Japan are likely to ink an agreement within the next couple of days to send Nepali workers to Japan. The Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security however, hope to do it tomorrow. The agreement succeeds Japan’s decision to bring 345,000 foreign workers from nine countries and a meeting between Nepal and Japan on bilateral labor agreement on January 15.

‘It’s Time’ Tuberculosis stops killing 18 people every day

Tuberculosis kills 18 people every day, according to the National Tuberculosis Center. In 2017/18, at least 196,000 people have been suspected with the disease. However, less than a quarter of the patients, around 32,000 accessed treatment. Of the total patients, 64% are men. Around 45,000 new cases are detected every year in Nepal and 15 out of every 100 people suffer from passive tuberculosis.

Wildlife at risk of road accident due to water shortage in park area

Wild animals inside the Banke National Park are frequently being killed in road accidents as they cross the East-West highway to reach the Rapti River for water due to the lack of adequate sources of water inside the park area. The animals are struck by speeding vehicles. The East-West highway stretches 75 kilometers inside the park. Seventy-two wild animals were killed in road accidents inside the park last year while 36 animals have been killed in similar circumstances so far this year.

Gunmen killed at least 134 Fulani herders in central Mali on Saturday, a local mayor said, the deadliest such attack of recent times in a region reeling from worsening ethnic and jihadist violence. The assaults on the villages of Ogossagou and Welingara took place as a U.N. Security Council mission visited Mali seeking solutions to violence that killed hundreds of civilians last year and is spreading across West Africa’s Sahel region.

Mozambique death toll rises to 446 after cyclone: minister

The death toll after a powerful cyclone in Mozambique has risen to 446 from 417, adding that 531,000 people had been affected by the disaster. Cyclone Idai lashed the Mozambican port city of Beira with winds of up to 170 kph (105 mph), then moved inland to Zimbabwe and Malawi, flattening buildings and putting the lives of millions at risk.
