Dilli Bista presents himself at Kanchanpur District Court

A week after the Kanchanpur District Court issued a warrant against Dilli Bista and Angur GC, Bista, the then Superintendent of Police at District Police Office, Kanchanpur, has presented himself before the court. Bista is one of the eight police personnel accused of destroying evidence of Nirmala Panta’s rape and murder on July 26, 2018. GC, however, is yet to present himself to the court.

Former DIG enters politics

Parvati Thapa, a former DIG of Nepal Police has entered politics. She has joined Upendra Yadav led Federal Socialist Forum, Nepal (FSFN). Thapa was the first woman police officer who had qualified to become the Inspector General of Police. However, Upendra Kanta Aryal, 11 months junior to Thapa, was appointed as the IGP. Thapa then had fought a court case against the government for refusing to promote her to the post of Additional Inspector General and eventually to the post of IGP.

TU vice-chancellor, IOM dean’s offices padlocked

Two student unions affiliated to Nepal Communist Party padlocked the offices of Tribhuvan University's vice-chancellor and the dean’s office of Institute of Medicine (IOM) to protest against hefty fees that medical colleges were charging to its students. The protesting student unions, All Nepal National Free Students Union and the All Nepal National Independent Students Union (Revolutionary) also accused the TU of not taking steps to act against colleges. Students have complained that the medical colleges were exerting pressure to students to withdraw their cases, threatening them and barring them from filling up their exam forms.

Acid attack uncivilised, heartless crime, does not deserve any clemency, says India's Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has said that acid attack is an "uncivilized and heartless crime" which does not deserve any clemency, Indian media reported. The apex court observed this while asking two convicts, who have already undergone five year jail for throwing acid on a 19-year-old girl in 2004, to pay Rs 1.5 lakh each as additional compensation to the victim. The top court also asked the Himachal Pradesh government to pay compensation to acid attack survivor under the Victim Compensation Scheme.

UEFA opens disciplinary action against Cristiano Ronaldo

The UEFA has started disciplinary action against Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for the celebration gesture following his team’s 3-0 defeat of Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in Turin, Italy. Having scored a hat-trick to lead Juventus to turn around a 2-0 first-leg deficit, Ronaldo seemingly imitated the celebratory gesture of Atletico’s coach Diego Simeone last month in Madrid after his team scored its first goal in an eventual victory over Juventus at Atletico’s home pitch — the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Ronaldo is being charged, according to the UEFA, with inappropriate conduct. The disciplinary body is set to take a decision on March 21.

More than 1,000 people were feared dead in Mozambique four days after a cyclone slammed into the country, submerging entire villages and leaving bodies floating in the floodwaters, the nation’s president said.
