Chand-led CPN's politburo member Mohan Karki arrested in capital

Police have arrested Communist Party of Nepal politburo member Mohan Karki alias Jibanta. A special bureau of the Nepal Police arrested Karki on Friday evening from near his Lalitpur-based rental room, according to police sources. Karki is the senior-most leader of the party to be landed in police net, five days after the government banned the activities of Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN in response to the growing incidents of extortion and violence by the party.

 Dr KC urges gov't to amend National Medical Education Act

Senior orthopedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC on Saturday urged the government to amend the National Medical Education Act which came into force last month.  In a press statement, Dr KC claimed that the law is in favor of medical mafias and it has several flaws. "We urge the government to address our demands as agreed before," he stated. The crusader for medical education reforms has warned to launch stern protest if his demands are not met.

PM Oli writes to New Zealand counterpart, condemns Christchurch attack

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has sent a message of condolences to his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern on the loss of innocent lives in Friday's mass shootings at mosques in Christchurch. In his message, Oli has strongly condemned the heinous act of terrorism and stated that indiscriminate killing of innocent people is an affront to humanity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press statement.

Chitwan on high alert following bird flu in neighbouring Makawanpur

A high alert has been maintained in the district following the manifestation of bird flu in the neighboring Makawanpur district. Import of poultry and its products into the district, a pocket area for poultry, has been tightened, while poultry owners have been asked to maintain biosecurity plan. "Transportation of poultry and its products is frequent through the district. So a tight measure has been kept in quarantine," said Dr Parshuram Phuyal, officiating chief of Veterinary Hospital. Sample of 150 fowls have been sent to Kathmandu for test, he said. 

Nepal enters into semi as group winner

Nepal women national football team has reached to the semifinal as a group winner of ongoing South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Championship. In the match held at the Shahid Stadium in Biratnagar on Saturday, Nepal defeated Bangladesh by three goals. All three goals were scored in the first half of the game.

Cyclone Idai batters Zimbabwe, at least 24 people dead

At least 24 people have died in south eastern Zimbabwe as homes and bridges were swept away by a tropical storm, the country’s information ministry said on Saturday. “Number of deaths is confirmed at 24 mainly from Chimanimani east. The number of missing people is currently 40 (and) the fatalities include 2 students,” the ministry said on Twitter.
