KATHMANDU, Oct 22: Lawmakers and leaders of the CPN (Maoist Center) have been pressing the party leadership to make the impeachment motion against Lokman Singh Karki, suspended chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), a success through the forging of a consensus among the three largest political parties.

They said the rank and file in the Maoist party has been demanding action against Karki and the differing views expressed by some lawmakers were over the procedures followed while registering the motion. They were not against ousting him from the constitutional body.

“Most of the lawmakers and other leaders in the Maoist party have been for taking action against Karki but the way the motion was filed at Parliament came as a surprise,” said a Maoist Center lawmaker requesting anonymity. “This style of working irked some lawmakers,  so our emphasis now is on how to create an environment that brings the three major political parties together in favor of the motion.”

The Maoist lawmaker argued that the latest move also has them worried about the continuity of the present ruling coalition with the Nepali Congress (NC).

“The impeachment motion must be taken ahead while making sure that it won't fail,” he said. “Therefore, our emphasis is to forge a very clear and strong accord among the three parties.”

Another Maoist lawmaker said that party leaders are in favor of the motion but some of them weren't happy because of the way it was handled.

Yet another lawmaker said the parties can't afford to take any immature decision that may result in the failure of the motion during House voting.

“What will be the consequences if the motion fails?” asked the leader. “Such a move shouldn't be led by any particular leaders but should rather be an institutional decision.”
