POKHARA, Sept 26: At least one person was killed and nearly a dozen others injured in an avalanche that occurred in the Mountain Manaslu located in Chumanubri Rural Municipality-1 of Gorkha.

Imagine Nepal Expeditions Pvt Ltd’s Rajendra Thakuri said that Climbing Assistant of Saturi Expeditions Pvt Ltd Anup Rai died in the avalanche around 12 noon on Monday. Jeet Bahadur Sherpa and Nirma Dorje of the same company were seriously injured in the avalanche. Dawa Sherpa, Furita Sherpa, Lakpa Tamang and others were also injured.

Two helicopters of Simrik and Kailash Air were ready to rescue the injured, but they could not be rescued due to adverse weather conditions, according to the District Administration Office, Gorkha. "It's been a long time since the helicopters were in standby position. But the weather conditions here are worse," said Purnima Shrestha, a climber at Manaslu Base Camp.

Helicopters tried to rescue from both Gorkha and Manang sides but were forced to abort their landing. The injured Sherpas from Camp No. 2 and 3 are themselves rescuing those trapped in the landslide. Avalanche had started falling in Manaslu a few days ago.

"As there was a lot of snow I couldn't climb and had to sleep in Camp 3 for three days and come back," said Purnima Shrestha, a climber who reached Manaslu. She said that there is a problem for the climbers because there is a lot of snow, landslides, and the roads are buried. Manaslu, also known as Killer Mountain, is 8,163 meters high.
