KATHMANDU, May 6: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially recognized the newly elected executive committee of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) led by Mahesh Shrestha, following the conclusion of the unification general convention under the leadership of Dr Shesh Ghale.

With the general convention now completed, the ministry has also initiated the process of withdrawing its earlier petition submitted to the Supreme Court (SC) seeking an extension of the court-mandated deadline for conducting the NRNA election.

The Foreign Ministry had registered a petition at the SC on April 18, requesting an additional six-month extension beyond the initial six-month timeframe granted by the court for conducting the election. However, after receiving the details of the convention and election on May 5, the ministry took a ministerial-level decision to withdraw the request.

A high-level committee mandated by the court had facilitated the successful conduct of the general convention between May 3 and May 5, leading to the election of Mahesh Shrestha as the president. The ministry has now acknowledged the newly formed committee as the official leadership of the NRNA.

Previously, the SC had issued a mandamus order following a writ petition filed by Rajesh Shumsher Rana against the Foreign Ministry, prompting the formation of the committee and the deadline for holding the general convention.
