KATHMANDU, May 7: Madhesi students representing different political parties on Monday formed an alliance, Broaders Madhesi Youth Students´ Front, to exert pressure on political parties for what they said was timely promulgation of a new constitution guaranteeing autonomous Madhesh state with right to self determination.

The cross-party alliance of Madhesi students also announced a series of protest programs starting Tuesday that include torch rallies and gatherings in all the headquarters of Tarai districts on May 14 and 16 and general strike across Tarai districts on May 15, 17 and 18. There would also be interactions in Birgunj and Nepalgunj on May 8 and in Kathmandu on May 10. [break]

Addressing a press conference Chairman of Madhesi Student Forum, a sister wing of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum, Ashok Yadav said that they stood together for Madhesi causes despite their affiliation to various political parties.

“We will launch massive movement if federal states are not carved according to the 22 points and 8 points agreements reached between Madhes-based parties and governments in 2007,” said Yadav. The alliance has also demanded the federal states be drawn on the basis of ethnic identity and economic viability.

Yadav said conspiracy was being hatched to weaken Tarai by dividing it into many federal states.
