LAHAN, Dec 5: Seven political parties in Madhesh Province have agreed on a new chief minister after discussions. The parties reached a consensus on the leadership on Thursday, a day before the deadline set by Province Chief Surendra Labh Karna, who had given until Friday, 5 PM, to form a new government.

According to Saroj Kumar Yadav, parliamentary party leader of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, the parties have already settled on a name based on consensus, which will be formally announced on Friday. All seven parties plan to jointly stake their claim to form the government at 2 PM today. Yadav said there was no dispute among the parties and that the new leadership was chosen unanimously.

LSP’s Jitendra Prasad Sonar (Sonal), a former CM, and NC parliamentary party leader Krishna Prasad Yadav are the leading contenders for the chief minister’s post.

Former CM Saroj Kumar Yadav, who was appointed under Article 168(3) of the Constitution, resigned after stating, during his address to the Provincial Assembly, that he was unlikely to secure a vote of confidence, as required by the Supreme Court’s mandamus.

Following his resignation, Province Chief Karna called for the formation of a new government under Article 168(2), giving parties until Friday evening to submit their claim.
