Lumbini Province reports 823 incidents of domestic violence in first quarter of the current fiscal year

BUTWAL, Dec 4: Eight hundred and twenty three incidents of domestic violence have taken place in Lumbini Province in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

According to the Provincial Police Office in Dang, these incidents were recorded in 12 districts that lie in Lumbini Province. Senior Superintendent of Police at the Office Raj Kumar Baidawar said the incidents of domestic violence have decreased this year as compared to the previous years.

The highest number of incidents of domestic violence were reported in Banke district until Kartik (Mid-November) of the current Fiscal Year 2020/21. According to SSP Baidawar, 272 incidents of domestic violence were reported in Banke, 161 incidents were reported in Rupandehi, 91 incidents were reported in Kapilvastu, 82 incidents were reported in Nawalparasi and 56 incidents were reported in Dang district.

Similarly, Bardia recorded 38 incidents of domestic violence, Rolpa reported 34 incidents, Arghakhanchi recorded 32 incidents, Gulmi recorded 26 incidents and Palpa reported 14 incidents. The number of instances of domestic violence reported in Pyuthan and Rokum East stood at 13 and 4, respectively, in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

SSP Baidawar said 477 of these incidents took place among farming families, 268 incidents occurred on housewives, 27 on workers, nine on students, 13 on unemployed persons and 20 others on traders. Eight such incidents were reported among employees and one on a foreign migrant worker.  

SSP Baidawar said that the victims include 736 women and 87 men. The highest number of domestic violence is found to have taken place among people aged between 26 years to 35 years.  A total of 376 incidents of domestic violence took place among people of this age group while the number of such incidents among people aged between 16 years to 25 years stood at 225  during the same period. 

SSP Baidawar said the instances of domestic violence among people aged between 35 to 46 years stood at 205 during the same period. A total of 123 incidents of domestic violence were recorded among people aged between 46 to 60 years.

Among those accused of violence against women, 249 are women and 696 are men. The highest number of cases of dometic violence are related to rape (155) followed by the cases of attempted rape (51). Similarly, 44 other cases of domestic violence are related to polygamy, four are related to child marriage and six are related to allegatin of witchery.

According to SSP Baidawar, three each cases of domestic violence are related to caste-based discrimination and practice of untouchability and unnatural sex, 10 are related to child sexual abuse, two are related to illegal abortion and six others are related to human trafficking.
