Locals thrash woman for 'witchcraft'

LAHAN, Feb 6: A woman has been thrashed severely on the charge of practicing witchcraft in a village of Siraha. Domani Chaudhary, 35, a resident of Dhodana VDC-2 in Siraha, was beaten up by six of her neighbors.



Domani, who has been admitted to a hospital in Lahan for treatment, said Ramakanta Chaudhary had provoked the neighbors to thrash her following the death of his newborn baby on Tuesday night. [break]



“Ramakant´s baby died soon after being born.His wife Shobha also suffered from stomach pain,” said Domani. “They thought that I cast an evil spell on them. So, they thrashed me.”







Domani has sustained multiple injuries to her chest and head. She says her son and daughter were also thrashed when they tried to protect their mother.



According to Ward Police Office, Lahan, those who beat up Domani, including Ramkanta, have fled the village. Inspector Dhakendra Khatiwada said they are searching for the culprits. The village where the incident took place is seven kilometers from Lahan.
