SINDHULI, May 18: The promises made by the elected local representatives during the elections are far from being implemented even  a year after the local elections.

Khadga Bahadur Khatri, mayor of Kamalamai Municipality, had pledged to reconstruct the buildings damaged by the 2015 earthquake after nominating his candidacy a year ago. The earthquake victims were elated by his speech and voted for him. However, Mayor Khatri has done nothing towards that end even in a year, said Kamala Devi, 65, of Kamalamai Municiality-14. “I am disappointed now,” she added. Khatri had also expressed commitment to resolve the problems of squatters during the election campaign. “Their speeches seemed to be good but they have not done anything to fulfill their commitments,” said Kamala. “We have not received land ownership certificates even after a year nor any other help.”

Gaumati Dhami of Dudhauli Municipality-5 said that the elected representatives preferred living a relaxed life doing nothing to addressing the problems of poor people. “We are burdened by additional taxes. I had to pay Rs 400 to correct a minor mistake in the recommendation about earthquake details,” she said. 

The elderly people accused the local representations of neglecting the problems faced by the people. “They gave speeches during elections promising to build roads, canals and supply electricity to rural areas. But they have done nothing in a year,” they said.  Dipesh Thapa of Kamalamai Municipality-6 said that the local representatives are themselves confused. “They are like the crows lost in a fog,” he added. 

The locals have accused the representatives of practicing nepotism and partiality. The natural resources such as river, forest and their products have been exploited for their personal benefits, said Binod Magar of Tin Patan Rural Municipality. “They haven’t been able to do anything they promised.”

However, Mayor Khatri claimed that they were working to translate their commitments into action. “We could not do the workswe had promised due to the lack of staffers. We are going to deliver on our promises soon,” he added.

Pani Raj Bamjan, chief of Marin Rural Municipality, also complained of shortage of staffers.
