KATHMANDU, April 12: Local-Level Central Coordination Committee (LLCCC), a loose alliance of associations of three local bodies, has strongly protested the government's decision to disenfranchise chiefs and deputy chiefs of rural municipalities and municipalities in the election of the members of the national assembly.

Issuing a statement on Wednesday, National Association of VDCs in Nepal (NAVIN), Municipalities Association of Nepal (MuAN), and Association of District Development Committees of Nepal (ADDCN) jointly demanded withdrawal of the government's decision through the amendment in the constitution.
The government has included this provision in the 11-point constitution amendment proposal registered in the parliament on Tuesday.

The LLCCC termed the government's move a conspiracy to demoralize the local level leadership at a time when preparations for the local-level polls have generated unprecedented excitement across the country. “The move to remove the voting weight of the local people's representatives can in no condition be in favor of local democracy,” said the statement.

The LLCCC has also urged all political parties, intellectuals and all citizens in general to exert pressure on the government to withdraw such an amendment bill. The body has also warned they will be forced to take to the streets if the decision to deprive the local body representatives of their rights to vote in the election in the national assembly members is not revoked.
