Aug 20: Liam Payne has overshadowed Cheryl’s new music announcement with a release of his own. The former One Direction singer confirmed new record First Time on Sunday night, just a few days after ‘overhauling’ the track listing in the wake of his split from Cheryl. Just a matter of days ago, Cheryl excited her fanbase by announcing her return to music with two ‘upbeat tracks’ set for October, which ends a four-year break from the industry.

Liam seemed determined to switch the focus to his own music with a series of tweets promising the release of his single on 24 August. He accompanied the announcement by three blank Instagram posts. Earlier this week, he penned a note to fans to explain that songs that felt like they were from ‘another age’ have been replaced by ‘songs that truly represent me’ in light of the events in the last few months.

Cheryl and Liam, who share 17-month-old son Bear, confirmed an end to their two-year relationship in June. Within two months, Liam had gone public with his new relationship with young model Cairo Dwek.

In response, Cheryl renewed her career focus and returned with new show Greatest Dancer and the promise of her first single release in four years.
