BHAKTAPUR, Oct 20 : Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said those forces wanting to murder democracy have now united.

In his address to a greetings exchange ceremony organized by the Nepali Congress, Bhaktapur district committee here today on the occasion of the Tihar, Nepal Sambat and Chhath festivals, the Prime Minister and NC president viewed that safeguarding democracy appeared as the main challenge of the hour just because of the leftist alliance.

"Democracy, republic and people's rights must be guaranteed. At the current time, forces wishing to finish off democracy have come together," he said and opined that's why the NC victory in the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives and State Assemblies was essential to tackle with such threat. He was talking about the recently emerged leftist alliance forged by the CPN (UML) and the CPN (Maoist Centre) in the country.

Stating that the leftist alliance had imperiled the democracy, he claimed that such unity was for imposing Communist authoritarianism and thus keeping the people in threat and fear.

"Nepal's Communists parties intend to rule over the people through an autocratic system which will be more dangerous than the Rana regime in the future."

He viewed that the communist political parties that were talking about nationalism could not be ever nationalists, underlining the need for unity among democratic forces and within the party to overcome the 'anti-democracy forces'.

"The country is at a very critical juncture," he said, pledging to hold the elections as per the schedule and creating a ground for strengthening of democracy through the full enforcement of the constitution.

Also speaking on the occasion, NC central member and former minister Ramesh Lekhak said the NC was not panicked upon seeing the leftist alliance. The party that carried a history of fighting against the Rana regime, the Panchayat system, the CPN (UML) and the Maoists was ready to prove it resistance to the leftist alliance.

The Prime Minister, on the occasion, launched a memoir titled "Jaya Nepal Bhaktapur". NC District president Durlav Thapa chaired the programme.
