Landslide blocks BP Highway; woman dies after being swept away by river

KAVREPALANCHOK, Aug 6: The Mamti road section along the BP Highway at Roshi has been blocked by a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall since 11:15 AM on Tuesday. Police said that the highway has been blocked due to the floodwaters from the Mamti River and Vaikure River, at Roshi Rural Municipality-11.

According to the District Police Office, Kavre, as the highway has been blocked, hundreds of vehicles are stuck on the road. It is reported that efforts are being made by security personnel and traffic police to reopen the blocked highway.

During the monsoon, the highway is often blocked at that place. One way-traffic has resumed in the Dhulikhel-Pakucha road section along the Araniko Highway, which was obstructed since Tuesday morning.

According to Rajkumar Shrestha, spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the District Police Office, the road is now open in one direction, thanks to the efforts by the teams of Nepal Police and Nepali Army, while efforts are ongoing to reopen blocked roads in both directions. As small landslides continue to take place in the area, excavators are kept standby to remove the debris immediately.

Similarly, a woman died on Tuesday after being swept away by the swollen Punyamata River of Dhulikhel Municipality-5. According to police, Bhagwati Bhagdas,50, originally hailing from Kandadevi Rural Municipality-3, Ramechhap and temporary residing  in Naikintar, Panauti Municipality-5, was discovered dead in the morning about 300 meters below the river in Shreekhandpur.
