Landlady arrested for refusing to rent out room to tenant citing her ‘lower caste’

KATHMANDU, June 20: Police have arrested a landlady who refused to rent out a room in her house to Rupa Sunar saying the latter belonged to a lower caste. Saraswati Pradhan of Babarmahal, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Circle Singha Durbar today, said Superintendent of Police, Ramesh Basnet.

KATHMANDU, June 20: Police have arrested a landlady who refused to rent out a room in her house to Rupa Sunar saying the latter belonged to a lower caste. Saraswati Pradhan of Babarmahal, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Circle Singha Durbar today, said Superintendent of Police, Ramesh Basnet.


Rupa Sunar who is also a journalist by profession had lodged a complaint against landlady Pradhan at the Metropolitan Police Circle Singha Durbar on Thursday. She had lodged a complaint with the police against the discrimination she faced in the presence of human rights activists, journalists and legal practitioners under the Caste-Based Discrimination and Untouchability (Offence and Punishment) Act, 2011.

Rupa said that she was also called to the police station after the police arrested the landlady.
