KATHMANDU, Jan 31: Rajendra Basnet, a peon working at Chabahil-based Land Revenue Office, has been accused of amassing Rs 89.8 million during his stay at the office.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Thursday filed a charge-sheet at the Special Court against Basnet after the anti-graft body concluded that he amassed properties disproportionate to his income through legitimate means.

As per the charge-sheet, the anti-graft body has sought a fine of Rs 89.8 million from Basnet. The CIAA said in a statement that Basnet and his family earned approximately Rs 7.4 million from legitimate sources, including salary, the sale of land since he joined public service in 1987. However, CIAA found that he has spent or invested more than Rs 90.73 million over the years.

The CIAA has sought confiscation of the illegally earned Rs 89.8 million and a fine equivalent to the amount as per the anti-corruption law.

Basnet’s wife, Sita, mother Tuku Kumari Basnet and nephew Kripa Basnet are also named as defendants.
