Lady Gaga has revealed that she was left 'bankrupt' during part of her Monster Ball tour after spending nearly £2 million on outfits, according to the report of Capital FM.

The singer said she put so much into the tour that she never realised she was losing money despite scoring numerous Number One hits in the charts.

'I put everything into the show and I actually went bankrupt after the first extension of the tour,' she told The Financial Times.

'And it was funny because I didn't know.'

'I called everyone and said: 'Why is everyone saying I have no money? This is ridiculous. I have five number-one singles'. And they said: 'Well, you're $3 million (£1.8 million) in debt'.'

The singer saw a turnaround in her fortunes when Monster Ball was staged at bigger venues and US TV channel HBO made a special about her.

In the end, Gaga's run took in around £138 million and was seen by 2.5 million people around the globe.

Her recent album 'Born This Way' knocked Adele off the top of the album chart at the weekend after clocking up the highest album sales of the year so far.

Her second LP sold 215,000 copies in its first week - more than the rest of the top 10 put together.
