KATHMANDU, Oct 21: Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Kushinagar International Airport in Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

PM Modi inaugurated the airport on Wednesday morning. Following the inauguration, the first international flight operated from there to Colombo, Sri Lanka. The newly constructed international airport in Kushinagar will help facilitate the movement of Buddhist tourists.

Kushinagar is an international Buddhist pilgrimage center and a focal point of the Buddhist circuit. Lord Gautam Buddha attained ‘Mahaparinirvana’ in Kushinagar. Apart from Kushinagar, the Buddhist circuit includes shrines in Lumbini, Sarnath and Gaya.

The airport will also play a major role in bringing tourists to Lumbini which will greatly help in the development of tourism in Nepal. With the operation of this airport, it will be easier for devotees to complete the journey of the Buddhist Circuit - Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Rajgir, Sankisa and Vaishali in less time. The airport will play a major role in bringing tourists from Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore to the Lumbini area.

Kushinagar Airport has been constructed at a cost of Rs 2.6 billion, with a terminal building spread over 3,600 square meters. The new terminal is said to provide easy arrival and departure services to 300 passengers.
