SOLUKHUMBU, Dec 30: The great festival of the Kulung community, Chakchakur 'Eledong 5077', commenced today.

The Chakchakur festival celebrated on Poush 15, 16 and 17 of the Nepali calendar is being marked by the Kulung community in its stronghold of Bung, Cheskaam and Gudel VDCs of Solukhumbu.

The festival, which started today, will end on Poush 18 (January 2) with exchange of greetings among the community members, Kulung Student Union, Solukhumbu Chairman, Bibash Kulung said.

During the festival, the cultural program and sport competitions will be held in various streets of Bung, Cheskaam and Gudel VDCs. The festival bears a remarkable resemblance to the Bada Dashain festival with Tika (a mixer of red vermillion powder) ritualistically pasted on the foreheads and blessings from the elders.

Apart from Solukhumbu, the festival is celebrated in 26 districts of the country including Sankhuwasabha, Ilam, Jhapa, Bhojpur and Kathmandu by the Kulung community members.

In Kulung language, the Nepali month of Poush is known as Chakchakur, which the Kulung community started celebrating since 2007 at the initiation of the Nepal Kirant Kulung Language Culture Revival Association. RSS
