The five natural elements-space (ether), earth, air, water and fire are known as Pancha Mahabhootas. Though each one has independent character, when they are all brought together they act upon one another in a distinctive way. All five elements need to be present in abundance within the home to make it vibrant and filled with positive energy. They have an interactive influence on all the inhabitants of the house. If a house is properly laid out accordingly to these five elements, the internal body currents of all living there will be normal and they will enjoy good health.

The centre of given building is governed by Ether (space) and this is the best area for peaceful introspection and relaxation. It represents sense of hearing in human body. Thus there should be pleasing and soothing sounds in the house.

Likewise, north-west section or direction or angle of any space or angle is ruled by the air element. Air (Vayu) is referred to as breath of Vastu Purusha and has restless quality. It is important to have abundant of fresh and free-flowing air in the house. In a human body, it is represented by touch and the house should be furnished with pleasing textures.

The south-east direction or angle of a thing or building is governed by fire (Agni) element. The location is best for a kitchen. It is connected with the digestive system of the human body. The food cooked in this direction becomes tasty and good for health. In a human body it represents sense of sight.

Water is as restless as air. At home it reflects the plumbing system of the house and various reflective surfaces. The direction is good for underground water tank and tube well. It represents sense of taste.

Finally, the south-west angle of a thing or house is ruled by earth element. Earth has the quality of tolerance; this area can accept heavyweights. Heavy materials can be kept in this direction. It is the best place for master bedroom. It represents sense of smell in human body. So while building new houses we need to consider five elements of nature and their role in our life.
