KATHMANDU, June 14: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has significantly expanded its ‘One Ward, One Model Enterprise’ program, intensifying efforts to promote entrepreneurship and skill development across its wards.

Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol informed that KMC has launched skill development training programs in eight additional wards—11, 19, 20, 23, 25, 28, 29, and 31—this year. Meanwhile, Wards 3, 4, and 22 are currently conducting skill enhancement training sessions.

Initially introduced last year in 15 of KMC’s 32 wards, the program now covers 23 wards, with plans underway to implement it in the remaining areas soon.

In addition, KMC is running various training programs under the Micro-Enterprise Development initiative aimed at reducing poverty. For instance, in Ward 10, residents have completed training in cooking, handicrafts, and pickle making. In Ward 14, participants are undergoing advanced training in producing bags from allo (nettle fiber) and crafting products from corn husks.

“After learning to produce goods, the next step is acquiring marketing skills,” said Deputy Mayor Dangol. “First, we ensure that high-quality products are made in sufficient quantity, and then we support the participants in marketing their goods.”

This year, the program has been introduced in 11 new wards—11, 15, 18, 19, 20, 23, 25, 27, 28, 29, and 31—where enterprises focus on activities like wool product manufacturing, Hakupatasi (traditional Newar attire) production, Marichari (traditional sweet delicacy) production, traditional Newar dressmaking, crafting sachika (thread), coin purses, and ribbon flowers and puppet making.

KMC aims to develop each ward into a model of sustainable micro-enterprise, empowering communities and fostering local economic development. Sewing dhaka fabric garments, crafting clay masks, sewing baby sets and gowns, producing yamari, frozen momo, and other food products and leather shoe making are some of the activities proposed by the metropolis. To support marketing efforts, each ward has set up a local souvenir shop (Koselighar) to showcase and sell the products.
