KATHMANDU, Oct 9: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has taken a step towards addressing unemployment issues by announcing the creation of 5,000 new jobs annually. Mayor Balendra Shah has laid out an ambitious plan, aiming to provide skill-based training to at least 15,000 individuals within a span of three years.

Under the banner of the "Employment and Income Growth for the Development of Kathmandu" initiative, Mayor Shah intends to collaborate with the Labor Bank to implement this visionary project. The program aims to bridge the gap between skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers and employers within the metropolis. The Labor Bank will serve as a platform to boost employment opportunities and facilitate the provision of skilled labor to employers.

According to KMC, the Labor Bank welcomes participation from permanent residents of the metropolis, taxpayers, and all Nepali citizens living in Kathmandu, even if they are renting accommodations.

In the fiscal year 2023/24, KMC has allocated resources for various initiatives, including the Metropolis Pride Project and the Golden Scheme, to be carried out across different wards within the metropolis. The overarching goal of the Golden Scheme is to integrate unemployed individuals into the Labor Bank and deploy them where their skills are needed most.

Mayor Shah highlighted three key areas where Labor Bank resources will be mobilized. The first area is internal management within the metropolis, encompassing tasks related to infrastructure development, environmental preservation, sanitation, and social development.

Additionally, the metropolis plans to utilize its "Job Portal" to engage various government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private enterprises, associations, and international organizations in job placement efforts.

A third area of manpower management involves facilitating part-time employment based on service hours through the labor bank app developed by the metropolis.

To ensure the welfare of registered workers, the metropolis will provide mandatory insurance coverage while they are on the job. Furthermore, Mayor Shah disclosed plans to establish a dedicated training center across 15 different locations through the Metropolis Pride Project. These centers will offer comprehensive training programs running throughout the day for a duration of 12 months, enhancing the skills of the workforce.
